Musculoskeletal refers to muscle, tendon, fascia, joint, ligament and nerve tissue. Injuries to these soft tissues can result in one or several of the following occurring:

  • Muscle fiber tears and weakness
  • Joint inflammation and ligament strains
  • Pinching or pressure on nerves

Then symptoms of pain, swelling, numbness, pins and needles, weakness or instability may be experienced in the soft tissues injured. The symptoms may also be referred to other parts of the body some distance from the site of tissue upset. What follows is loss of function in one or many parts of the musculoskeletal system.

The skills of the physiotherapist in restoring function and movement to muscle, joint or nerve tissue require a clinical assessment to diagnose the musculoskeletal condition. Hands on treatments by the physiotherapist may include a variety of massage techniques, joint and muscle mobilisation along with specific exercise therapy, including Pilates. Electrotherapy, dry needling, splints and taping may be other choices of treatment. The physiotherapist will also encourage self awareness of normal movement and posture patterns, to assist a healthy return of function that is appropriate for the individual.
